Life In A Clip

So, I have just talked to my dear Adelaide friend Skott- who now lives in Canada- and we were talking about movies. It went from Gore to Horror...and we ended up realizing we both love REAL LIFE stories...docu-/ real life films from all different corners of the world...subtitled, rough, no stunts, no doubles...just capturing life, landscapes, hardships, cultures and the lives they live.

One of my favorites still is "A Time For Drunken Horses"...a movie placed in Iranian/ Iraqi border land, about 3 siblings who's father dies and they have to fend for themselves. It is an amazing, heartbreaking yet beautiful story which made me cry multiple times.

Yet another great movie- from my home country of Germany- was "Das Weisse Rauschen"(= White Noise). It's about a young guy not coming off a trip that he took with his older sister and her boyfriend, and he starts becomign paranoid and schizophrenic...a lot is handcam...you hear what he hears...it is available in original with English subtitles, too!

Now, the last movie I wanna endorse has been close to my heart for years now: "The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things". It is harsh, sad, tough, yet even a drug addict can love her child...when she is not flying high on drugs! This follows a boy's life with his addict mom, the times she loses him to authorities and her parents, gets custody back at times, with various boyfriends who physically abuse him...and if you look close enough, Marilyn Manson has a small roll as one of her boyfriends, too. Odd to see him with no make-up and just as a real person. Great, sad movie...but hey: Life is not a fucking walk in the park!

And just in case you've been living under a rock and don't know some of Hilary Swanks early work...yet another heartbreaker which almost made me throw up at a certain scene and want to de-sex rapists: "Boys Don't Cry". Apparently now available on Blue Ray, too?

...do yourselves a favor and watch some real gripping movies every once in a while...REAL life stories...REAL drama instead of people spending millions on special FX and stunt doubles in movies that just feel like you've seen it somewhere before, with the same actor who had a similar role in a  different Blockbuster!

  1. The German one is good. Watched the majority of it in one of my film classes. The handheld is well done in it too; none of that Blair Witch stuff. I need to get around to seeing the last 30 mins though...

  2. It's a great movie, Daniel Bruehl(the actor) has been able to land some roles in English/US films in the past few years. Check out the others!!!
